a proposed 400 channel work • 2020

Contraption is a sound sculpture comprising five multichannel towers, each containing several rings of eight speakers. The speakers are hidden behind perforated steel covers, such that the audience is confronted with five featureless industrial-looking pillars. As with all GRIDs installations, the proximity of the speakers accommodates high spatial detail in the sonic outcome.
Each ring of speakers acts as a 'cog' in an imagined machine. Visitors to the installation are empowered to trigger rotary gestures which travel up and down the pillar or catalyse similar events on other pillars. Longterm gestures across the installation settle into stable acousmatic scenes.
